Feeling Hot, Hot, Hot's featured image

Many of us will suffer from interrupted sleep patterns and discomfort from the warmer temperatures this summer. If you don’t have access to air conditioning, the professional residential cleaning experts at MOLLY MAID suggest trying these tips and tricks to help you stay cool.

Cool Down your Bedroom before Going to Sleep

  • Do what you can to prevent heat from building-up in your bedroom during the day by keeping your blinds shut and your curtains closed. Be sure to keep your windows shut as well if the temperature outside is warmer than the temperature inside your home. At night, if the temperature outside is cooler, open your windows to let the cooler air in.
  • Remember that heat rises. If your room is on the top floor, try sleeping on a lower level in your home such as the basement.
  • Utilizing a fan can also help cool your room down. Here are a few tricks you can try:
  • Create a Crosswind: When the sun sets, open your window and place one fan in front of your window, facing out, and the other facing inwards. This set-up will create a crosswind, removing stale hot air and bringing cool fresh air into your room.
  • Take Advantage of Tall Windows: If you happen to have tall windows in your home, place a fan in front of your window, as high up as possible. Make sure the fan is facing out the window. You can utilize a shelf or ladder to elevate the fan. Since hot air rises, the goal of an elevated fan is to push as much hot air out of your room as possible.
  • Switch the Direction of your Ceiling Fan: If you have a ceiling fan in your home, switch the direction so it rotates clockwise rather than counter clockwise. By doing so, the fan will circulate heat up and away instead of blowing hot air around your room.
  • Create a DIY Air Conditioning Unit: Place a fan on the ground. Next, place a large bucket of ice directly in front of your fan. The ice will cool the air from the fan, cooling your room in the process. If you don’t want to use a bucket of ice, placing a cold wet cloth over the front of your fan should produce the same effect.

Cool Down your Body before Bed

  • Water is a great cooling agent. Showers and baths before bed can help cool your body down. Wearing light pyjamas to bed can also help keep your body cooler.
