Molly Maid is sweeping in to help re-stock depleted food bank shelves across Canada.

The residential cleaning franchise, founded in Mississauga nearly 30 years ago, is collecting food donations from customers for its annual Christmas in July food drive. The goods will help address a growing need in numerous communities across the country.

Andrew Burditt, Salvation Army territorial public relations director, says that the organization’s food banks are starving for donations. “We are seeing increases in demand in our food banks of 30 per cent or higher in some areas over this time last year,” he said. “Supplies are dwindling while the need is up, so we are especially grateful to Molly Maid for stepping in to assist during the sparse summer months.”

Amelia Mackie, who owns the Molly Maid Mississauga South franchise, says employees have a”unique opportunity to collect food items” when they’re servicing their customers’ homes. “We are excited to help out,” she said. “Our customers are very generous.”

Across Canada, franchises have already started collecting donations to support local food banks. Both Molly Maid Mississauga South and Mississauga North have been collecting donations for Salvation Army locations in Mississauga.

Molly Maid Mississauga North owner, Nina Choma, says her franchise has already collected six bags of food. “We know it’s been a challenging time for a lot of our clients…but people are always willing to help the less fortunate and always willing to empty their cupboards and closets for what we need,” said Choma, whose franchise also collected winter coats for people in need.

Since 2003, Molly Maid franchises and their customers have donated nearly 30 tonnes of food across Canada.
