The Art of Unpacking in Five Simple Steps's featured image

Everyone loves a warm winter getaway. From choosing a destination, to booking your flight, planning your trip and packing, there’s always a build-up of excitement throughout the entire process. Once you return however, all your left with are amazing memories, a killer tan and of course a whole lot of unpacking to do! Luckily, MOLLY MAID has five simple steps to help you master the art of unpacking with ease!

  1. Unpack the day you get home

No one wants to unpack as soon as they get home from vacation, but getting to it right away will stop any chance of procrastination. The best thing to do is to think of the unpacking process as a transition from vacation mode to your daily routine. This will help you get back into the swing of things.

  1. Tackle your clothing first

Start by unpacking your clothing. Bring all ‘dirty’ or worn clothing to the wash and fold and return the rest. To make the unpacking process easier, pack a garbage bag in your suitcase, to help you separate your clean clothes from your ‘dirty’ clothes. That way, all you have to do is bring the bag of clothes directly to the laundry room. Make sure to also put away your shoes and accessories as well.

  1. Put toiletries back where they belong

Once you have dealt with your clothing, bring your toiletries back to your bathroom. If you have any travel supplies such as shampoo and conditioner, make sure to place them directly into your shower so you can use them up first. This will help minimize waste and reduce your travel clutter. To help with the unpacking process, place your liquid toiletries into plastic freezer bags prior to your trip. This will help prevent spills and make it easier to return products to your bathroom once you get home.

  1. Sort through your souvenirs

Take the time to separate your souvenirs. Place all gifts for others aside. If you are not sure when you will be seeing your friends or family next, place their gifts somewhere out of the way, where they won’t get forgotten! Any souvenirs you purchased for yourself should be displayed in a place of your choosing. If you like to collect bus tickets, brochures or postcards for scrap booking, tuck them away in an old shoe box until you are ready to create your scrap book.

  1. Clean and store away luggage

Start by cleaning the outside of your suitcase first. Use the soft brush attachment to vacuum the exterior of your suitcase. Make sure to vacuum inside all exterior pouches as well. Unzip your suitcase and vacuum the inside next. Once you have finished vacuuming, using warm soapy water, dampen a microfibre cloth and wipe down the lining. For a bit of fragrance, place a scented dryer sheet inside your luggage to keep it smelling fresh until your next trip.
