Experts say the most neglected part of a bedroom is the floor – and in many cases, that means the carpet.

There is a lot more dirt in the carpet than an occasional once-over with the vacuum can deal with. Dirt, germs and dead skin (from you) often burrow deep into your carpet.

Here’s how to keep your bedroom floor clean.

  • Vacuum at least once a week. First dust, and open blinds and windows. Use a vacuum with strong suction and a powerful motorized brush.
  • Move furniture so you can vacuum underneath it. The bed is probably the most important piece of furniture to move. You spend at least a third of your life on the bed and you lose hair, dead skin, etc., which can end up underneath your bed. Focus on the carpet where it meets the wall, which is a place that dust seems to congregate.
  • While you’re vacuuming under the bed, strip the bed and vacuum the mattress too. Always use a mattress cover to keep your mattress is better condition for a longer period of time.
  • Deep clean your carpets at least once a year, especially if you have pets. Rent a steam cleaner or have your carpet professionally cleaned.
  • Consider removing wall-to-wall carpets and having a hardwood floor installed instead. It’s easier than having a carpet to keep clean and dust-free. If you feel hardwood would be too cold, to keep your feet warm, put down an area rug on the hardwood floor. They’re much easier to clean; just toss the area rug into your washing machine and hang to dry.
