Washing Machine do’s and don’t’s's featured image

Don’t

  • Wash a small load of laundry using a large load cycle. Using an incorrect wash cycle decreases efficiency, and increases cost, as more water and electricity are used for larger washing cycles.
  • Use more soap than required for the size of the load you are washing. Always measure the appropriate amount of laundry soap for the load prior to dispensing it into the machine. More soap, does not result in cleaner clothes. In fact, too much laundry soap will cause your washing machine to work harder than necessary.
  • Leave your wet clothing in the washing machine for extended periods of time. The moisture from your wet clothing can cause mold to build up in the drum of your washing machine.

Do

  • Pre-treat stains prior to putting them into the washing machine. This will allow you to wash the clothing in cold water, rather than warm water, making the cycle more energy efficient.
  • Use washing bags when laundering delicates such as underwear, silks and whites for added protection.
  • Always check the pockets of your pants for tissues, lip chap, etc., prior to putting them into the wash. This will prevent potential damage to your clothing.
  • Clean your washing machine on a monthly basis. This can be done by adding one to two cups of white vinegar to the soap dispenser and running it through a hot water cycle.
